Based on strong scientific evidence, black cohosh has been approved for menopause and dysmenorrhoea by the German Commission E (Foster, 1999). Commission E established that black cohosh products should be standardized to contain over 2.5% triterpene glycosides for efficacy, as is present in this product.

There is statistically significant evidence from several random control trials that black cohosh can be used to effectively manage menopause issues, primarily hot flashes, sleep disturbances, joint pains, and mood changes. In one study, black cohosh benefitted up to 80% of affected women (Foster, 1999). Note that black cohosh is often given with St John's wort if there are mood changes associated with menopause.

It is unclear whether black cohosh has an estrogenic and/or an anti-estrogenic effect; however, black cohosh does inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cells in vitro (Bodinet & Freudenstein, 2002). Black cohosh is an emmenagogue and is contraindicated during early pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester (Dugoua et al., 2006).
