Curcumin Extract 750mg (with Bioperine®) (60 Capsules)

Curcumin is the principal curcuminoid in turmeric. Curcumin has been reported to have marked anti-inflammatory activity, as outlined in the article "potential therapeutic effects of curcumin, the anti-inflammatory agent, against neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, autoimmune and neoplastic diseases" by (Aggarwal et al, 2009, see also Aggarwal BB, Sung B., 2009).  Owing to hepatic metabolism, little arrives with the circulating plasma even in doses up to 4 grams daily, although it does significantly increase hepatic glutathione levels at lower amounts (Zheng, Yumei & Chen, 2007). Co-supplementation with 20 mg of piperine (extracted from black pepper) significantly increases the absorption of curcumin; one study funded by a prominent manufacturer of piperine claims an increase of 2,000% (Shoba et al., 1998).

In cell culture and animal studies, curcumin has been found to inhibit pro-carcinogen bioactivation caused by Phase I cytochrome P450 activity (Thapliyal & Maru, 2001). At the same time, it increases Phase II enzyme activity, increasing glutathione S-transferases generally thought to enhance the elimination of potential carcinogens (Iqbal et al., 2003).

In the colon, curcumin extract has been shown to reduce the oxidative damage to DNA through its cytokyne balancing and antioxidant activities (Iqbal et al., 2003, also Zhou H, et al, 2011)).  Curcumin has also been found to induce cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis in a variety of cancer cell lines grown in culture, including colorectal cancer lines (Garcea et al., 2004; Moos et al., 2004). As a result of the promising findings in animal studies, several controlled clinical trials in humans designed to evaluate the effect of oral curcumin supplementation on precancerous colorectal lesions, such as adenomas, are under way.
