Kava Extract 250mg (60 Capsules)

Gastrointestinal and Immune Support

Kava extract was approved in 1990 as a non-prescription drug by the German Commission E for treatment of symptoms such as anxiety, stress, and nervous restlessness, and now has 41 clinical trials supporting this use. Kava-lactones, the active ingredient, is a mild modulator of GABA receptors, but mostly works on the limbic system and is a muscle relaxant (Stevinson, Huntley & Ernst, 2002). Kava-Kava extract LI 150 was found to be as effective as two commonly-prescribed drugs for generalized anxiety disorder in an eight-week randomized, double-blind, multi-centre clinical trial on 129 outpatients (Jussofie, Schmiz & Hiemke, 1994). In a 2004 German study, the sleep questionnaire sub-scores for 'Quality of sleep' and 'Recuperative effect after sleep' after four weeks of double-blind treatment showed significant differences in favor of kava extract. Positive effects in anxiety, well-being, and global clinical evaluation scores showed good therapeutic efficacy. Safety and tolerability of kava was good, with no drug-related adverse events or changes in laboratory parameters in the 61 subjects given 200 mg of kava extract (Lehrl, 2004).

However, published case reports indicate that rare adverse events can occur with kava use, including dermatological reactions (a reversible skin rash in niacin-deficient patients) (Ruze, 1990), and liver damage in chronic overusers. Thus, monitoring liver enzymes is advised. High doses can also cause pupillary dilatation and may cause muscle weakness. Therefore, people taking more than one daytime dose of kava extract should not drive or operate heavy machinery. It has no dependency or addictive qualities, however (Lehrl, 2004). Kava is an effective short-term herb for relieving anxiety, muscular tension, and stress-induced insomnia (Lehrl, 2004; Boerner et al., 2003).
