In a metastudy of research in people with a pattern of delayed sleep phases, melatonin greatly decreased sleep onset latency — on average by 38 minutes, an effect that appears to be clinically significant (Buscemi et al., 2004). It has little effect in normal sleepers or people with broken sleep (insomniacs), presumably because their melatonin levels are sufficient. It does not affect rapid eye movement sleep.


In a metastudy of melatonin use for jet-lag, its reviewers concluded: "Melatonin is remarkably effective in preventing or reducing jet-lag, and occasional short-term use appears to be safe. It should be recommended to adult travellers flying across five or more time zones, particularly in an easterly direction, and especially if they have experienced jet-lag on previous journeys" (Herxheimer & Petrie, 2002).


Slow-release melatonin is relatively ineffective. Melatonin has been found to be more effective with a rapid peak — thus, it is ideal to open the capsule and take the powder sublingually, or take on an empty stomach 10 minutes before bedtime. Caution: There are a few case reports suggesting that melatonin is contraindicated in people with epilepsy and patients on warfarin.


Recommended Dosage:

1 or 2 capsules at bedtime, or directed by your healthcare professional.
